Giving Coolidge his due
Thank you for your thoughtful editorial in Sunday’s Rutland Herald and Times Argus, “What Coolidge said.” You did President Calvin Coolidge’s words justice by taking the time to read the entire “Toleration and Liberalism” speech, reflect so deeply on it and connect its meaning to today. Your piece illustrates the depth of Coolidge’s ideals. I’m pleased that his words are resonating beyond our quiet July Fourth celebration.
Readers can find the entire speech and other speeches on the Coolidge Foundation’s website, www.calvin-coolidge.org/toleration-and-liberalism.html.
I also wanted to let everyone know that the Coolidge Foundation is sponsoring a panel discussion on “The Role of the Media in Civil Public Discourse” on July 18 at 5:30 p.m. to be held at the Hanover Inn. Panelists are Cal Thomas, nationally syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, Jane Lindholm, host of VPR’s “Vermont Edition,” Chris Graff, former Vermont Associated Press bureau chief, and Sarah Ashworth, news director of New Hampshire Public Radio. The program is free and open to the public.
