BARRE — The teenager who drowned Tuesday at the falls on the Stevens Branch has been identified as Jesse Thomas Belcher, 16, of Barre.

A death notice from the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home said Belcher died while trying to save a friend.

According to police, seven youths were at the top of the falls off Bridge Street when one of the swimmers went over the falls. Police said another swimmer tried to help the boy who went over but was pulled over the falls as well.

Wednesday afternoon, Chief Michael Stevens of Barre Town would not confirm the identity of either of the teens involved, saying the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
