Stores support healthier choices
I’m writing to thank CP Dudley, East Calais General Store, Golden Meadows Country Market (formerly Meadow Mart), Kurrle’s Fuels, LBJ’s Grocery, Maple Corner Store and Uncommon Market for making an important contribution to the health of our community.
As part of our outreach to improve the health of Vermonters by educating them about the risks associated with tobacco use, alcohol use and obesity, members of Central Vermont New Directions Coalition recently visited these fine retailers.
At these stores we found supportive partners who realize that by offering healthier options, they can have a positive impact on the community. Small changes — like moving signs for alcohol and tobacco products above child height or making displays for healthier options (like fresh fruit and local produce) more prominent — can make a big difference.
Central Vermont New Directions Coalition provided “Fit & Healthy” posters and other display materials because research has shown that point-of-sale advertising and in-store displays increase the number of unplanned tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food purchases. Plus, if alcohol and tobacco ads are seen by kids every day, they have the potential to make these items seem “normal” to the youngest members of our community.
We’re not asking retailers to stop offering these products, just to let shoppers know there are healthier options too. Central Vermont New Directions Coalition salutes CP Dudley, East Calais General Store, Golden Meadows Country Market, Kurrle’s Fuels, LBJ’s Grocery, Maple Corner Store and Uncommon Market for making small changes that can have a big impact.
