    Live up to the rhetoric

I want to thank Sen. Sanders for reminding us that a society is measured by how it treats “its weakest and most vulnerable citizens.” (Sunday Times Argus, June 23) It gave me an opportunity to reflect on how poorly we are doing. The senator is concerned about how we treat our elderly and, especially now that we have assisted suicide, I agree with him. However, I think we need to extend that concern to the other end of life.

Why do we deny the humanity of the unborn child and allow her to be aborted at will?

By Sen. Sanders’ standard we are failing. I hope he will have the courage to apply his standard to all persons, for there is no one weaker or more vulnerable than the unborn child.

I hope that it is not a case of cynical politics (seniors and expectant mothers vote, the unborn child does not) and I challenge Sen. Sanders to live up to his own rhetoric.
