    Unnatural selection

Recently, printed on a black T-shirt, I saw the symbol of a fish with four eyes and four legs labeled “Monsatan” and the words “Genetically Modified Foods — Doing God’s work for Mother Nature.” It stopped me cold.

GMOs, an example of man’s ignorance and disrespect toward nature for money. Our very lives depend on the complex interactive workings of nature; we human animals are part of nature. And yet companies like Monsanto are allowed to seriously mess with nature possibly past redeeming. Get this: Taking an animal gene and inserting it into a plant for a protein. Or genetically modifying a seed so that an herbicide can only kill what surrounds a GMO corn, not the corn. What about the soil receiving the herbicide?

Moving DNA from one species to another is very unnatural selection. We don’t know its long-term effects. Labeling may help phase GMOs toward oblivion. Many countries have sense enough not to import them. But what can be done? We need the kind of care indigenous people gave their environment for thousands of years.
