Waterbury bond a good investment
As a board member of the Waterbury Historical Society who has been involved in the planning process for the proposed Waterbury municipal complex for the past 18 months, I am asking for our communityís support for this project.
Between public forums, open meetings and step-by-step analysis of various options within the village, it was concluded (by consensus of the trustees, Select Board, library commissioners and the historical society) that the Stanley Hall site offered us the best opportunity. The proposed municipal complex will have two acres of land (within the village) to develop a multifunctional facility and will offer ample parking, accessibility, green construction and room for potential growth.
It is my opinion that the option of building the municipal complex on the community gardens property behind the current library would significantly impact the residential neighborhood on Winooski Street. This site also has poor access and egress to Main Street. The current municipal building property has size limitations without the additional purchase of adjacent properties.
The state of Vermont, knowing that the property is located in the flood plain, is still investing $125 million to renew the state office complex. With this reconstruction, the state plans on raising the elevation of new construction above the flood plain and flood-proofing the buildings that are renovated. The proposed municipal complex will also be constructed above the flood plain.
By voting in favor of the bond, we will be thankful that we had the foresight to combine four municipal functions that currently need new or upgraded space under one roof. We will be thankful that two current municipal properties will be back on the tax rolls when sold. We will be thankful that we invested $5 million in doing the right thing for our future.
