NORTHFIELD ó Joyce Hope Lane, 85, formerly of Barre, Vt., died at the Central Vermont Medical Center surrounded by family on June 16, 2013.
She was born in Montpelier, Vt., on Jan. 29, 1928, the daughter of Homer G. and Violette E. (Ireland) Lane. After Violette passed away, Joyce lived with her Aunt Ruby and Uncle Francis Whittemore in Barre, Vt., and spent a number of summers on the family farm on the Horn of the Moon in East Montpelier.
She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1946. She later received a bachelorís degree from UVM in 1950.
She worked as a high school business education teacher in many areas around the state, including South Royalton, Waitsfield, Barton Academy and Lake Region, before retiring in 1990.
She was a member of the Sigma Gamma sorority, the Eastern Star, and was a former secretary of the Business Teachers Association. She enjoyed traveling and time spent exploring the western United States, flower and vegetable gardening, and most of all, spending time with her family.
Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Ruth Lane, of Morrisville, Vt., and Minnie Lane, of Colome, S.D.; her nephews, Clair Lane and his wife, Patricia, of Calais, Vt., David Lane and his wife, Marsha, of Jeffersonville, Vt., and Stan Lane, of Johnson, Vt.; her niece, Cynthia Sealey, and her husband, Glenn, of Colome, S.D.; her great-nieces, Amy Lane Sykas, of Plainfield, Vt., Robyn Graves and her husband, Keith, of Winooski, Vt., Stephanie Wood and her husband, Dan, and children, Zachary, Reagan and Parker, of Warner, S.D., and Rebecca Lane, of San Francisco; her great-nephew Craig Sealey, of Colome, S.D.; and many, many loving cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Bradford Lane, of East Montpelier, Vt., and George Lane, of Colome, S.D.; her uncle and aunt, Francis and Ruby Whittemore, of Barre, Vt.; and a great-nephew, Steve Sykas, of Plainfield, Vt.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the North Branch Cemetery in Middlesex, Vt. A reception will follow the service at the Steak House on the Barre-Montpelier Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Camp Thorpe in Goshen, Vt., and American Cancer Society.
