BURLINGTON — The Burlington School Board has fired a high school Spanish teacher who’s accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Giovanna Yaranga has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. She awaits trial.
A lawyer for the school district told the Burlington Free Press the board, at a closed-door hearing Tuesday, found the 44-year-old Yaranga guilty of conduct unbecoming a teacher. It also found she violated the district’s sexual harassment policy.
The city initially placed Yaranga on paid administrative leave after her arrest last month. Superintendent Jeanne Collins later issued her a written notice of an intended dismissal.
Collins told the Free Press that Yaranga had seven days to respond but never contacted the district. She also did not attend Tuesday’s disciplinary hearing.MORE IN Vermont NewsToday, dog owners across Vermont will register their dogs at local town offices.
