• Soldier with ties to Vt killed in Afghanistan

    BURLINGTON ó A soldier with ties to Vermont has been killed in Afghanistan.

    Maj. Jaimie Leonard and a second soldier died from injuries they suffered from small arms fire over the weekend.

    The 39-year-old Leonard had been serving in Afghanistan since January. The intelligence officer from Warwick, N.Y., has family in Vermont. The Vermont National Guard has extended its condolences to her family.

    The West Point graduate also served tours of duty in Bosnia and Iraq. Her awards include two Bronze Stars and two Meritorious Service Medals.

    Leonard was training Afghan soldiers at a base in Paktika province Saturday when she and others were shot by a man in an Afghan army uniform. The attacker was also killed.
