Douglas Klein of Eastwind Diamond Abrasives holds an example of the many diamond abrasive belts he sells worldwide. The Windsor company manufactures and sells abrasive wheels, belts and pads.
WINDSOR — Douglas Klein’s lifelong passion has always been about mining, and now that passion is paying off.
His company, Eastwind Diamond Abrasives of Windsor, is one of the few worldwide companies that export diamond abrasive products for industrial and technical uses. It’s a four-person operation that exports 60 percent of its products to six continents and is a leader in the diamond grinding industry.
Klein’s success has caught the attention of the Small Business Administration. In fact, the SBA named him Vermont Exporter of the Year last week.
Dan Monahan, public affairs officer for the Vermont District Office of the SBA, said Eastwind Diamond Abrasives is competing against major companies all over the world and proving to the business world that they can compete, no matter the size.
“Here’s this little operation in a niche industry. They’re competing against world companies and it’s just a small little business tucked away in Windsor. It’s a great story,” Monahan said.
Klein has been in the diamond abrasive products business for 15 years, and it was his belief that he could make better products. Eastwind Diamond Abrasives offers diamond resin bond and electroplated diamond dot abrasive products, loose diamond abrasive powder, cerium resin bond products, custom products and accessories.
“I was using 3M products and they were very expensive and not satisfactory. So I decided to make my own. It took a few years, but we’re doing steady,” Klein said.
Klein said abrasive products are used in high-tech ceramics, optics, body armor and more.
Much of his business comes from Saudi Arabia, Dubai and other oil-producing countries where diamond abrasive products are in high demand.
Eastwind Diamond Abrasives does not have a retail store but they do stock and fill custom orders all over the world.
Klein will be recognized at the 2013 Vermont Small Business Awards ceremony June 13 in Shelburne.
