MONTPELIER — The attorney general’s office is warning about a financial scam targeting Vermonters by text message.
The office said Tuesday that it has received a number of consumer reports of fraudulent text messages from the number 400999, saying there is a problem with the recipient’s debit or credit card.
The text provides a phone number to call to “unfreeze” the account.
Like other so-called phishing scams, the message seeks personal information.
The attorney general’s office says consumers should be wary of text messages and calls they did not initiate and never give out personal information to an unverified source.
The office says consumers who have responded to the text message should contact their financial institutions immediately to protect their accounts.MORE IN This Just In
