• Vt to dismiss charges against man shot by police

BURLINGTON — Vermont prosecutors say they’re going to dismiss assault charges filed against a mentally ill man who was shot and wounded by police during a struggle.

A psychiatrist says the defendant, 35-year-old Isaac Sage, of Winooski, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and that he was insane during the alleged assaults and is incompetent to stand trial.

The Burlington Free Press quoted Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan as saying after a Friday status conference that his office intended to drop the charges against Sage.

Sage pleaded not guilty last month to two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and other charges.

Sage was shot in the leg April 25 after shocks from a stun gun failed to subdue him. He spent three days in jail before being hospitalized.
