A 79-year-old local woman died Monday after her kayak overturned on the Buffalo National River in northwest Arkansas, according to the National Park Service.

Sally Sairs’ boat flipped after her head struck a tree, the park service said. She was under water for an estimated 40 to 45 minutes.

A friend who was with her reported being unable to right the kayak or aid Sairs. Other boaters who came down the river helped turn the kayak over and get Sairs out of the water, authorities said.

National Park Service rangers, along with Newton County Search and Rescue, recovered the body.

Sairs had lived in Woodbury and previously in Montpelier.
