    Take a leadership role

In response to Wilson Ring’s article “Vt. is gun friendly …,” I would argue the call for gun control has very much taken hold in Vermont, despite the failure of the governor and the Legislature to act. According to Castleton Polling Institute’s February survey, Vermonters support gun control measures, including mental health reporting and closing the gun show loophole.

Parents across Vermont are organizing to keep our kids safe from gun violence. Our movement is growing and is being heard in the Statehouse. There are reasonable middle ground solutions to which both responsible gun owners and concerned parents can agree, including paying closer attention to whom firearms are sold and to how they are stored, but we need more legislators with the courage to stand up to the intimidation of the pro-gun lobby.

Gov. Shumlin’s position on guns does little justice to the concerns of parents. In fact, he is standing in the way of progress on this issue. Parents across Vermont demand that our state take a leadership role in protecting our kids. It is time to repair the weak link that Vermont has become in efforts to protect citizens from gun violence. Now is the time for Vermont representatives, senators and the governor to help us find the middle ground and to create responsible, meaningful legislation.
