BARRE — A Barre Town man has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Christopher A. Osborne, 25, was arraigned Thursday on a charge of sexual assault of a victim under 16 years old, a felony, in Washington County criminal court in Barre. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the police affidavit, police were notified that the girl was having sex with an adult by the name of Chris. Police say they met Osborne and he admitted having sex with the girl one time in March while his girlfriend was across the street. Osborne told police he felt “connected” to the girl and said he did not know it was illegal to have sex with a girl under 16, according to the affidavit.

Police say the state Department for Children and Families talked to the girl and that after she heard of Osborne’s confession she said they did have sex.
