BURLINGTON — A former Vermont man has been sentenced to serve nearly four years in prison for his role in a $2.5 million mortgage fraud scheme.
Thomas Komasa of Saugerties, N.Y., was convicted last year of 10 counts of fraud. His wife, Heidi Komasa, was convicted of eight counts of fraud.
Heidi Komasa was given a sentence of six months of home confinement and three years of supervised release. A judge concluded her role was minor.
Prosecutors said between 2004 and 2006, the Komasas made false statements and documents to obtain mortgage loans to buy and refinance five residential properties in Chittenden County with plans of reselling them.
They obtained more than $2 million in loans for which they were unqualified.
They sold one property, but four others were foreclosed upon.MORE IN Vermont News
