Bill would move Vt. primary to early August
MONTPELIER — The Vermont Senate is considering a bill that would move up the state’s primary election to early August.
If passed by the full Legislature, the 2014 primary would be held on Aug. 5.
Historically, Vermont’s primary was held in mid-September, but prior to the 2010 election the date was moved to late August to ensure the Secretary of State’s office has time to produce general election ballots in time to meet federal deadlines, including sending absentee ballots to overseas service members.
The bill would also require town and city clerks to report primary and general election results the day of the election and it would move up the filing deadline for major-party candidates to mid-May rather than early June.
The bill is scheduled for debate in the Senate on Wednesday.MORE IN This Just In
