BARRE TOWN — Winifred Olive (Montgomery) Burrington, 87, formerly of Barre Town and Burlington, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Winnie was born on April 12, 1925, in Boston. She was the only child of Edward and Helen (Bellevue) Montgomery. She was raised in East Boston and summered with her parents in East Burke, Vt. It was in East Burke where she met her future husband, Norman Burrington, and where they made their home.
Winnie attended Framingham (Mass.) State Teachers College. In 1944, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., during World War II.
In 1966, Winnie and Norman relocated to Barre Town. Following Norman’s death in 1972, she brought her tremendous work ethic to a variety of retail stores in central Vermont, rarely missing a day of work. In 2004, Winnie moved to Burlington to live in Heineberg Senior Housing. In February of this year, she became a resident of the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Winnie had eight children, Edward Burrington, who died in 1988; Kathleen Tucker and her fiancé, George Yost, of Tewksbury, Mass.; Jeanne Hommel and her husband, Peter, of East Barre; Patricia Carbee and her late husband, Sherwood, of Essex Junction; Norman Burrington Jr. and his wife, Laurie, of Burlington; Stephen Burrington and his wife, Michele, of Swanton; Barbara Burrington and her husband, David Desautels, of North Hero; and Thomas Burrington and his wife, Diane, of Barre; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kevin Izzo and his wife, Hui Gao, of Sharon, Mass., and their sons, Yali and Yaming; Scott Hommel and his wife, Natalia, of Stockbridge; Keith Paxman and his wife, Julia, of Warren, and their children, McKenna and Kellen; Kyle Paxman, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif.; Misty Crompton and her husband, Chris, of New Boston, N.H., and their children, Andre and Aiden; Brooke Burrington, of New York, N.Y.; Ethan Burrington, of Burlington; Owen Burrington Hoppe and his wife, Dakota Brizendine, of Jericho, and their children, Ronin and Leda; Emma Burrington, of Burlington; Anna Hoppe, of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; Shawn Burrington, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and Renee Burrington, of Burlington.
Winnie took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of her large and extended family. Her family actively loved and supported her throughout her life and were with her at her passing. She will affectionately be remembered for her dry wit, her sense of humor, her kindness, and hospitality. A visit to Winnie’s home always included being asked to sit down for a cup of coffee and a piece of her homemade chocolate cake. Life will not be the same for her family without her. However, her values of caring, joyful celebrations, kindness and compassion will live on through all of them.
Winnie’s family would like to extend their deep gratitude to her loving friends at Heineberg Senior Center and also to the professionals at Woodridge Nursing Home and Central Vermont Medical Center for the excellent care and attention given to her.
A celebration of Winnie’s life will be held on Friday, April 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Entombment will take place in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault, to await later burial with full military honors in the Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke on Friday, May 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions in her memory be made to the Chittenden County Humane Society, 14 Kindness Court, South Burlington, VT 05403, or to the Woodridge Nursing Home, Activities Program, c/o Ellen O’Hara, Director, P.O. Box 550, Barre, VT 05641.MORE IN Obituaries
