    in burglary spree

BURLINGTON — A Vermont man has been sentenced to serve 18 months in prison after admitting to nine burglaries during a five-month span in 2011.

David Verge, 33, of Essex said he broke into Burlington homes to help support a drug habit.

Verge told the court his days once revolved around finding his next fix, a cycle that continued until he sought support.

Verge had spent time in jail for convictions of similar burglaries.

His lawyer asked for 30 days in jail followed by six months of home confinement. Prosecutors sought six to 12 years.

The judge compromised on 18 months.
