BRATTLEBORO — A former Northfield man, who is facing sentencing for a near-fatal stabbing in Northfield in 2011, was convicted Friday of two counts of sexually assaulting a child in Westminster four years ago.

David Edson, now 29, was convicted after a weeklong jury trial in Brattleboro criminal court, said Windham County Deputy State’s Attorney David Gartenstein.

The victim was 10 years old at the time of the repeated sexual assaults, which took place during the summer of 2009 in the village of Gageville in Westminster, Gartenstein said. The girl reported the assaults two years ago, when she was 12, and she testified at the trial.

Gartenstein said the girl now lives in Utah with her father.

He said Edson, who was represented by St. Johnsbury attorney David Sleigh, faces two potential life sentences for the two different charges of aggravated sexual assault. He was also convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.

The prosecutor said Edson also testified. He said the jury, which deliberated for seven hours Friday, asked to rehear the victim’s testimony, as well as her taped statement to police.

“The jury worked long and hard and we thank them for their verdict,” said Gartenstein, who said the victim returned to Vermont to testify, accompanied by her father, as well as a police officer and a social worker who testified in the case.

Gartenstein said Edson pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault in the stabbing case and faces a separate sentencing hearing in that case.
