BOLTON — The Vermont Land Trust is planning to buy 1,100 acres of land that are part of a backcountry ski trail system in Bolton that will eventually become part of the Mount Mansfield State Forest, the trust said Thursday.

The trust raised the $1.85 million purchase price from more than 1,200 donations, some as small as $1 raffle tickets, three anonymous $100,000 contributions and an $800,000 grant from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board.

The trust is buying the land from the real estate ownership group Catamount Bolton LLC. The deal is expected to close this spring. Eventually the land will be transferred to the state of Vermont and it will become part of the Mount Mansfield State Forest.

“The Bolton Valley Nordic and Backcountry property has a rich history of outdoor recreation, and it is part of a large block of important wildlife habitat,” said Kate Willard of the Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. “We are excited about the prospect of adding this land to Mt. Mansfield State Forest and keeping it available to the public.”

Once the deal is complete, the state will license the Bolton Valley Resort to continue managing the trail system in the mountains around the ski resort.

The land trust is still raising money for the project to help create a fund for management of the property, primarily maintenance and improvements to trails, roads, parking areas, shelters, recreational facilities and other recreational infrastructure and management needs on the land.
