    Saturday voting available in Montpelier

MONTPELIER — The Montpelier city clerk’s office will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for early voting.

Residents can cast their annual ballots during that time to help prevent long lines at the polls on Town Meeting Day.

“In November, we had an unprecedented rush of voters when the polls first opened, and as a result a lot of people had to wait in lines,” Montpelier City Clerk John Odum said in a news release. “Being open for a few hours on the weekend is one small way we can help prevent that from happening again.”

A far smaller turnout is expected for Montpelier’s annual meeting compared with November’s general election, but early-morning lines could still occur, particularly given the additional staff needs related to the elevator breakdown in City Hall, according to the release.

Residents with accessibility and mobility challenges will be voting at the police station.

If the weekend voting helps prevent logjams, the extended hours could expand for the next election, Odum said.
