• Ice causes interstate woes
     | February 12,2013

MONTPELIER — Rapid icing of Interstate 89 in the Berlin and Montpelier area led to a three-vehicle accident and sent several others off the road Monday evening.

The accident was reported just before 9 p.m. near Exit 7. The northbound lane was shut down for a time so the accident could be cleared.

Earlier, at least half a dozen cars slid off the highway between exits 8 and 9, according to reports to dispatchers.

Authorities responding to the slide-offs at about 8:30 reported “solid ice” on the roadway, and one said he was unable to stop even at 20 mph.

Traffic became backed up at Exit 8 as southbound tractor-trailers and other vehicles were unable to make it up the hill on the interstate.
