WEBSTERVILLE — Solange A. Gagnon, 71, of Websterville Road, took her final journey on Friday, February 8, 2013, after losing her battle with Alzheimer’s. Her family provided unconditional care, comfort and support, and was able to keep her at home.
Born on April 12, 1941, in Dixville, Quebec, Solange was one of 12 children of Arthur and Medora (Fontaine) Ouimette.
On July 11, 1959, she married Adrien B. Gagnon. In 1960, they moved from Canada to the Barre, Vt., area. They later moved to their present home in Websterville in 1969.
Solange was previously employed at Country House Restaurant, Green Mountain Diner, McDonald’s and at the Barre Town School cafeteria where she retired after 20 years of service. She so adored all of the students and is remembered by many as “the lunch lady.”
Her greatest achievement was her family, which provided her with much pride and joy. She was a doting wife, mother, mimi and great-mimi (or “The Greatest”).
Solange loved family gatherings, holiday celebrations, music, dancing, gardening, wild birds and Fridays. Every Friday was a holiday for her and it is very fitting that her final journey took place on this day of the week. She loved being the core of her family and provided each and every one of them everlasting memories.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Adrien. She leaves four daughters, S. Francine Beede and her husband Charles “Chuck” of Williamstown, Colette Gagnon and her companion Claude Ayotte of Lac de Plage, Quebec, Nancy Dutil and her husband Mike of Barre, and Tina Morrison and her husband Kevin of Barnet.
She also leaves her precious grandchildren, Rachel Laggner and her husband Daniel of Williamstown, Renee Beede and her companion Justin Holbrook of Barre, Danielle Thompson of Frederick, Md., Lizette Dutil of Williamstown, and Aaron Morrison and Ally Morrison of Barnet. In addition, there are four great-grandsons with another one on the way, Riley and Colby Laggner and Donovan and Jonathan Sicard.
Of course, there is her Pug Bud (her son) who provided her endless companionship, protection, and gave Solange eyesight when hers had failed.
In addition, she leaves behind three brothers, Lucien Ouimette of Coaticook, Quebec, and Rachel (Theresa) Ouimette and Albert Ouimette of Willimantic, Conn.; and three sisters, Marie-Jeanne (Arthur) Bissonette of Coaticook, Quebec, Lucille (Roger) Lafond of Manchester, N.H., and Cecile Roy of Coaticook, Quebec.
She leaves her brothers/sisters-in-law, Nil and Yvette (her best friend) Gagnon of Elmore, Bertrand Gagnon, Fernande Lehoux, Marie-Marte Lafond, Louisette Gagnon and Laurier Gagnon, all of Coaticook, Quebec, Armand and Theresa Gagnon of Willimantic, Conn., Lorraine Isabelle of Montpelier, Bernadette Gadbois of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Edith Ouimette and Antoinette Ouimette of North Windham, Conn., and Carole Ouimette of Virginia.
Solange was predeceased by her exceptional parents; her brothers, Leonard, Martial, Andre and Laurent Ouimette; her sister, Georgette Dubriel; her brothers/sisters-in-law, Conrad Gadbois, Therese Ouimette, Hector Roy, Anita Gagnon, Maurice Lehoux, Arthur Isabelle, Leo Lafond, Real Lavoie and Muriel Lavoie. Ma Tante Solange leaves many, many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, 79 Summer St., Barre. There are no calling hours. Entombment will take place in the spring.
Following the Mass, Solange’s immediate family will gather privately for a time of sharing.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care and support provided by Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice. They also thank the staff of Central Vermont Medical Center for supporting Solange and her family for giving her peace and tranquility during her last days.
