BARRE — A Montpelier man has admitted to drunkenly cutting his son’s finger with a knife late last year and trying to gut a dog.

Ronald J. Waggoner, 52, pleaded guilty to simple assault in Washington County criminal court in Barre Friday. He was sentenced to three months to one year in jail, all suspended except five days on the work crew, and two years of probation.

During the hearing, Waggoner admitted the information in the police affidavit was accurate. The affidavit says his son, Dean Waggoner, heard yelling and when he went downstairs he saw his father holding a knife and standing over the younger Waggoner’s dog. The son went over to stop his father, according to the report, and Ronald Waggoner started swinging the kitchen knife at him, cutting the son’s finger.

Ronald Waggoner’s wife also told police he came into their bedroom before the incident, awakened her and told her he was going to “gut the dog.”

A breath test revealed Ronald Waggoner had a blood alcohol content of 0.238 percent at 4 a.m on Dec. 17.

Ronald Waggoner has previously had two convictions for driving under the influence and one conviction for violating conditions of release.
