The Norwich University Regimental Band represented Vermont on Monday at President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade in Washington, D.C.

The 55-member Northfield-based unit marched the 1.6-mile route down Pennsylvania Avenue to reach the White House shortly before 6 p.m., at which time it played the “National Emblem March,” composed a century ago by Vermonter E.E. Bagley.

“It was a long day and a little nappy, but everything went smoothly,” the band’s director, Lt. Col. Todd Edwards said by phone after the event. “What an honor it was to perform for the president.”

The oldest collegiate band in the country, the Regimental Band — founded in 1823 — has traveled to the swearing-ins of presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. It is set to return to the state today.
