• Montpelier teen honored for 4-H accomplishments

MONTPELIER — A 16-year-old Montpelier 4-H Club member has been recognized as the 2012 Washington County 4-H’er of the Year.

Emily Campbell, daughter of Jack and Pamela Campbell, was selected for her leadership, service and mastery of projects.

“It was definitely a surprise,” Campbell said.

A friend of hers, Spaulding High School student Mariah Harding, won the award from the Washington County 4-H Foundation the previous year.

As a seven-year member of the Partridge Hill Horse Lovers 4-H Club, Campbell has excelled in the horse project and earned a spot on the University of Vermont Extension state 4-H horse judging team that competed at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Lexington, Ky., in November. The judges evaluate horses’ abilities in performing tasks and their breeding quality.

Being involved with that national horse event was a goal Campbell set for herself when she first joined 4-H.

The U-32 junior has been a club officer and served on the Vermont 4-H Teen Congress board.

As a board member she helped plan this annual UVM Extension event, which brings 4-H’ers from throughout the state to the UVM campus for three days of educational workshops, team-building exercises, community service projects and fun activities, according to a 4-H news release.

Campbell credited the many life skills she learned in 4-H — including leadership and organization — as one of the reasons she was selected to represent the United States as a delegate to the International Earth Science Olympiad in Buenos Aires in October.

At the Washington County Youth Leader Presentations and 4-H Achievement Night in November, she gave a presentation on her experiences at the earth science event.
