Folklorist set for Jan. 21January 04,2013
BARRE — In recognition of the work of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the Vermont History Center will hold a storytelling by folklorist Jane Beck on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the center on Washington Street in Barre.
Beck will recount the stories of Grafton resident Daisy Turner, a child of former slaves. She met Turner in 1983 and recorded a series of interviews about her life. Those interviews were the basis for the Peabody Award-winning radio series “Journey’s End: The Memories and Traditions of Daisy Turner and Her Family.”
A statement released by the history center said, “Turner left us a legacy loaded with tales of discrimination, resilience, and strength of the African American experience in Vermont. Her talent, her strength of character and personality, and her rich personal story make her a notable figure in Vermont history.”MORE IN This Just InThe City Council is forming a committee to work with the Vermont College of Fine Arts Full Story
