MENDON — A 45-year-old Rutland County woman died after she was struck by two cars while crossing Route 4 in front of the Cortina Inn in Mendon on Friday night, according to police.
Vermont State Police Sgt. Thomas Mozzer said Drury Morgan was crossing the highway from the Mendon Mountain View Lodge after picking up a paycheck where she was employed.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 5:15 p.m.
Just after 8 p.m. Mozzer said they were unsure if Morgan had a Killington or Mendon address.
“She appears to be wearing dark clothing,” said Mozzer at the scene. “Initial reports say she had consumed alcohol and could have been intoxicated.”
He later said they received two independent reports saying Morgan had consumed alcohol Friday night.
The first vehicle, described as a station wagon similar to a Subaru and possibly green, was traveling east when the driver hit the woman, police said. Mozzer said they believe the driver left the scene, heading east.
Police briefly stopped a vehicle in Pittsford, but quickly ruled it out as being involved in the accident.
The second driver, Joseph Ferrero, of Huntington Station, N.Y., stopped and called 911, the police sergeant said. The vehicle had some minor damage to the mirror and windshield on the passenger side.
Mozzer said no criminal charges would be filed against Ferrero, but that if the first driver is located, he or she will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting.
He said the crash is still under investigation.
The Rutland City Fire Department and the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department went to the scene and started resuscitation efforts on the victim without avail.
Route 4 was restricted to one lane while police investigated the crash, delaying traffic in both directions. No further information was available at press time Friday night.
