BERLIN — Fire has destroyed a hay barn and engulfed a home on Three Mile Bridge Road in Berlin, but one of the homeowners says no one was hurt and that horses at the property are safe.
The home belongs to Brad Towne and his wife, Rita.
Fire crews from throughout the area were called to the scene about 8:30 p.m.
At 10:10 p.m., much of the first and second floors of the house were engulfed in flames, and all that remained of the hay barn was a few upright timbers. One of three chimneys on the home toppled shortly after 10 p.m.
Rita Towne said many neighbors helped her corral 12 horses and a pony that had been in a second barn that was unaffected. While the home burned, the animals were in a fenced area farther from the fire.
The initial fire calls indicated that the burning barn held animals, but Rita Towne later said that was not the case.
She said the barn and home were insured and that no people were hurt.
Tanker trucks were sent to the scene from several communities, and crews pulled water from the river as far away as the area near Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.
Several additional tank trucks were brought in around 10 p.m., including from Northfield and Washington.MORE IN This Just InThis week in Montpelier... Full Story
