    What’s the point?

I read with interest that the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation was holding a lottery for “cut your own” lots from trees marked for removal. I think that this effort is a wonderful benefit to individuals who are struggling in this economy and need this heating resource this wood will offer. What I am appalled at is the requirement of $30 for winners to pay for the privilege of being selected. For our most needy, $30 is a significant amount out of a family’s budget. What on earth does the state of Vermont need the $30 for? While I applaud the effort, I am dismayed at the thinking that occurred resulting in needy folks paying to help cull the forest that the department would have to do anyway if it was not offering this benefit.
