Rutland’s GE Aviation plant will share in a $197 million Navy engine contract for the F/A-18E/F carrier-based fighter, the office of Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced Monday.

The contract to build 52 engines is being apportioned among several GE plants.

GE Rutland’s share of the contract is $23.7 million, or 12 percent of the award.

The plants on Columbian Avenue and Windcrest Road have more than 1,000 workers. The plants make airfoils for a variety of military and commercial jet engines.

“GE Rutland and its workforce continue to prove their skill and success as a forward-leaning manufacturer and as a corporate citizen of Vermont,” Leahy said in a statement. “This contract reaffirms the value of GE Rutland’s products to our national defense and the confidence that the Navy has in their work.”
