MARSHFIELD — Gordon W. Durkee Sr., 76, of Marshfield, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at his home.

Born on February 13, 1936, in Barre, he was the son of Martha (Kidder) and Malcomb Durkee Sr. He graduated from Marshfield High School in 1955 and attended St. Johnsbury Trade School for drafting.

Gordon married the love of his life and best friend, Connie Dudley, on September 23, 1956. He was proud to say they were married for 56 years and he cherished every moment they had together. Together, they built a family whom Gordon was so proud of. His children and grandchildren meant the world to him and each of them knew that. Gordon was proud to point it out. Almost three years ago, his favorite granddaughter blessed him with his first great-grandchild, McKenna Rae, who was the apple of his eye.

Gordon retired from National Life Insurance Co. on April 1, 1988, after 32 years. A year later, he took a temporary job with Vermont Life Magazine, which continued for 22 years. Gordon was a member of the Vermont National Guard for 13 years and then he joined the Army Reserves, retiring after 15 years. Most recently, Gordon was a member of the Vermont State Guard. Just this week, he was promoted to Major. Upon his death, this award was presented to his wife, Connie, by his C.O., Darrell Burkhalter. This had been approved three days prior to his death, without Gordon’s knowledge.

He was a past member of the Twinfield School Board. Through the years, he served as a town service officer in Marshfield, a hunter safety instructor for over 40 years, and was a member of the Marshfield Fire Department. He was an active member in the Wyoming Masonic Lodge #80 of Marshfield, which he joined in 1964. Gordon served on the board of trustees for the Village of Marshfield, serving as the president for several years. He was a past member of the Montpelier Elks.

Gordon had a passion for hunting, fishing, reading and playing cribbage. He was happy to be a part of his grandsons’ Boy Scout troops, having been a Boy Scout himself. Just recently, he was becoming computer savvy, learning to use his laptop. Gordon and Connie camped for over 47 years in the Vermont State Parks. Most recently, he loved spending his time camping at the Groton Forest Road Campground, which Connie and he called their summer home. He enjoyed splitting wood and socializing with his campground family. Most importantly, he enjoyed being with his family and friends. He loved to give hugs and kisses!

Survivors include his wife, Connie of Marshfield; his son, Gordon “Bill” Jr. and his wife Robin of Woodbury; his daughters, Bobbie McAvoy and her husband Patrick of Ware, Mass., Betty Durkee and her partner George Harris of Marshfield, Becky Durkee of Marshfield and Betsy Dutil and her husband Robert of Marshfield; grandchildren, Greg McAvoy of Ringe, N.H., Geoff McAvoy of Ware, Mass., Glenn McAvoy and his partner Stacy Agnew of Alexander, Va., Debbie Durkee and her partner Derrick Barnett of Marshfield, and Daniel Durkee of Woodbury; a great-granddaughter, McKenna Durkee of Marshfield; and his loyal canine companion, Baxter. He also leaves behind brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and his extended daycare family; in addition, of course, his beloved grandcats, granddogs and rabbit.

Gordon was predeceased by his brother, Malcomb Durkee Jr.; his beloved sister-in-law, Barbara Dudley Mears; a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law; and three nephews and one niece.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, in the Old Labor Hall on Granite Street in Barre. Family and friends may call at the Old Labor Hall on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Wyoming Masonic Lodge #80, 32 Hollister Hill Road, Plainfield, VT 05667; or to the North Country Animal League, 16 Mountain View Meadow, Morrisville, VT 05661.
