Moretown Landfill not above the law
David Taube’s article on Moretown Landfill misses a key point. Yes, taxes could increase if the landfill closes. But Moretown should never have permitted an ever-growing landfill to operate in a residential neighborhood to begin with. And much of what is deposited there comes from outside Vermont, including sewage. The landfill has failed to control its fugitive odors, in violation of state law. Like the rest of us, the landfill needs to comply with the law or face the consequences. They do not deserve special treatment because of all of the difficulties, which have been known for many years, that closure might cause.
