Berlin police now have policy on using Tasers
BERLIN ó The Berlin Police Department now has a policy for Taser use.
Town Administrator Jeff Schulz presented the policy to the Select Board at its meeting Monday. He said the policy is based on a model created by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns and is used by many communities and police departments.
The town agreed in June to purchase four Tasers, or stun guns, for the seven-member police department.
Schulz said after reading the policy that officers will now have ďa lot to think aboutĒ before they use the Tasers. For example, when confronting an out-of-control person, police will need to carefully consider the risk of injury from the Taser if the person might be pregnant or on drugs.
Schulz said there is also a clear understanding that officers will need some training before they can use the Tasers. However, itís still unclear how much and what kind of training the officers will be given.
The policy was not adopted by the board but was supplied as information to let the board know a policy was in place.MORE IN This Just InMONTPELIER ó Both major candidates for Vermont governor have places they donít want to go for... Full Story
