Aurora J. Atherton Rites
BARRE — The funeral service for Aurora J. Atherton, 99, a former Essex Street resident, was held on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the United Federated Church in Williamstown. She passed away Nov. 8, 2012, at the home of her grandson, Chris Atherton, and his wife, Cheryl, in Williamstown.
The Rev. Deborah Laporte, pastor of the church, led the service. Organist Stephen Morse led the congregation in the hymns, “Blessed Assurance,” “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.” He also accompanied soloist Janice Covey in the hymns, “On Eagle’s Wings” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”
The scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments were by granddaughter Laura Howard and great-grandson Seth Atherton. The eulogy was given by Aurora’s niece, Sister Lorraine Ambrosini. Daughter-in-law Norma Atherton read her original poem, “God’s Welcome Mat,” and granddaughter Shelley Rhea read a poem, “Memories of Grammy.” Grandson Chris Atherton read reflections written by his children. Remembrances were offered by niece Cynthia Corey, great-granddaughter Nicole Howard and others in the congregation.
Interment took place in the Hope Cemetery in Barre with Rev. Laporte offering the committal prayers. The bearers were grandsons Chris Atherton, Geoff Atherton, Scott Dennis and Warren Howard and great-grandsons Seth Atherton and Zachary Atherton.
Following the committal service, family and friends gathered at the Hilltop Restaurant on Quarry Hill in Barre Town for a time of sharing and refreshments.
