WILLIAMSTOWN — Dorothy Louise “Dottie” Davis, 88, of the Gardens and a longtime resident of Bolster Avenue in Barre, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Her family had been at her bedside.
Born July 31, 1924, in Montpelier, she was the daughter of George Sherry and Mayme (Lindsay) Burton. She attended Montpelier Elementary School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1942 and had attended Vermont Junior College, also in Montpelier, on a scholarship.
In June of 1946, she married Richard E. Davis in Montpelier. Most of their married life had been spent in Barre. He is deceased.
In earlier years, she had worked as a secretary in Boston, and for many years she was director of the Hedding United Methodist Church nursery school program.
A veteran of World War II, she served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy.
She enjoyed all card games, bowling at the Masonic Temple, gardening, collecting and reading cookbooks, golfing and her family cottage at Caspian Lake. For many years, she hosted the extended Davis family for many of the holiday dinners.
Dottie was a former member of the Hedding United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, the Barre Women’s Club, of which she had been president for several terms, the Barre Jaycee Anns and the Mountain View Country Club in Greensboro and had served on its board of directors.
She had hosted a radio show at WNCS in Montpelier devoted to cooking and interviewing renowned chefs in the area and operated her own business, Truffles, Etc., from her home on Bolster Avenue.
Survivors include her son, Richard E. “Ricky” Davis Jr., and his wife, Nekol Pyle, of Barre; and three daughters: Debra Davis and her husband, Enver Safir, of Crofton, Md., Valerie Blachly and her husband, Ted, of Sutton, N.H., and Tammy Davis and her husband, Michael Braun, of Berlin; and nine grandchildren: Peter, Kerstin, Taylor, Jonathan, Jane, Daniel, Richard, Lindsay and Anna.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter Sherry Wheale.
Her funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre.
Burial will follow in the Lincoln-Noyes Cemetery in Greensboro.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
