BARRE — The Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) was filled to overflowing for the funeral and concelebrated burial office of Joseph E. Ryan Jr. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. He died at his Tilden House home Nov. 1, 2012.
The Rev. Lisa Ransom, former rector of the church and family friend, was principal celebrant assisted by concelebrant the Rev. Earl Koopercamp, current church rector. The crucifer was Debbie Alicen.
The Old and New Testament Scripture lessons were proclaimed by Goddard and Susan Graves. Organist Marjorie Strong accompanied the congregation in the hymns “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry,” “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden.”
The Rev. Ransom delivered the homily and celebrated communion with the Ryan family prior to the church celebration.
Granddaughter Kristina Ryan Bellavance offered words of remembrance.
A large uniformed escort from the Vermont State Police, the Barre City and Barre Town police departments, of which Joe had been a member, as well as numerous cities, towns and sheriff’s departments from throughout the state were at the church and cemetery services.
The bearers were family friends Bruce and David Sanguinetti, Barre City policeman Andy Marceau and Barre Town policeman Brian Brown and kilt-attired Russell Slora and Donald Murray, who piped “Amazing Grace” to close the church ceremony.
Burial followed at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington, where the Revs. Ransom and Kooperkamp read the committal prayers.
Piper Murray played several Scottish airs at the graveside and completed the ceremony with “The Pipers Stroll.”
Fellowship and luncheon followed at the Masonic Temple in Barre, which was catered by the Hilltop Restaurant.
Prior to the calling hours at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, Monday evening, the Rev. Kooperkamp prayed with the Ryan family. The Masonic memorial service was conducted later in the evening at the funeral home by Granite Masonic Lodge 35 of Barre, of which Joe was a past master. Past master David Sanguinetti was worshipful master; Russell Slora was chaplain; and past master Ronald Sanguinetti was senior warden. Current master Ronald Tousignant was junior warden.
