BARRE — Voters in Barre and Barre Town collectively approved a $3 million fix to the failing roof at Spaulding High School on Tuesday.

The vote wasn’t close to close as voters in the two neighboring communities that jointly own the local union high school authorized funding for the two-year roof replacement project, 4,628-2,240.

Norma Malone, chairwoman of the Spaulding School Board, welcomed word that the ballot question had passed by a comfortable two-to-one margin — paving the way for the first phase of the work to begin next summer.

“We’re thrilled,” she said, after learning the results late Tuesday night. “We’re really happy with the voters’ support and we’re ready to move forward.”

According to Malone, as soon as the 30-day petition period passes bid specifications will be drafted and the groundwork will be laid for the first phase of construction. That work will involve a major section of the school’s aging roof.

“The day school is out (next summer) we want to be ready to start construction,” she said.

According to Malone, the board has not yet decided whether to bond or borrow for a project that will be completed during back-to-back summers. She said board members are seriously considering conventional financing that would likely involve a 15-year bank loan.

“We’re really looking to make this as economical to the taxpayers as possible,” she said.
