BURLINGTON — The trial of a Vermont woman who’s charged with hitting a pedestrian with her car while texting and driving has ended with a plea deal.

Nineteen-year-old Emma Viera of Colchester pleaded guilty on Thursday to grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle with injury resulting, and will receive a five-year deferred sentence. She could serve up to six months in jail or be sentenced to home confinement as part of the deal.

She’s accused of striking 53-year-old Deb Drewniak in August, 2011, as Drewniak was walking her dog in the dark in Colchester.

The plea deal was reached late on the third day of Viera’s trial.

The conviction would be erased from Viera’s record if she stays out of trouble during the five years of probation.
