MARSHFIELD ó Two Cabot women died Saturday morning when their car collided head-on with a pickup truck, Vermont State Police reported.
Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, police said.
The carís driver, Holly Trombly, 28, and one of her three passengers, Jennifer Hurley, 29, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. near the Beaver Meadow Road intersection on Route 2.
Two passengers in the rear of the car, John Bates, 26, and Andrew Rivera, 22, were taken by Cabot ambulance to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. They were then transferred by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said. They also were not wearing seat belts, police said.
The driver of the 2001 Toyota Tundra truck, Nathaniel Smith, 26, of Cabot, was wearing a seat belt and did not report any injuries, police said.
Trombleyís 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier was passing a vehicle that was in its lane when the crash occurred, said Trooper Jacob Metayer, who led the investigation of the accident.
Metayer said the car was speeding and that improper passing was a factor.
Police said the Cavalier was destroyed and the Tundra sustained front-end damage.
Resident Nora Straight said she heard the crash from her home. She called in the accident to 911 and helped direct traffic in the moments afterward.
Part of Route 2 was closed for about four hours Saturday morning.
Responding to the crash scene were fire and emergency crews from Marshfield, Plainfield, Cabot, East Montpelier and Barre Town.
Plainfield Fire Chief Patrick Martin said emergency officials hold a critical-incident stress debriefing after incidents like the one Saturday. A debriefing is scheduled for Monday evening.MORE IN Central VermontThe following is a sampling of calls to Montpelier police in recent days.
