MARSHFIELD – Two Cabot women who weren't wearing seat belts died Saturday morning when their 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier collided head-on in the oncoming lane with a 2001 Toyota Tundra pick-up truck, police said.

The driver of the car, Holly Trombly, 28, of Cabot, and one of her three passengers, Jennifer Hurley, 29, also of Cabot, were found dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. near the Beaver Meadow Road intersection.

Two passengers in the rear of the car, John Bates, 26, and Andrew Rivera, 22, were transported by a Cabot ambulance to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, then transferred by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Their injuries were not life-threatening. They also were not wearing seatbelts, police said.
The car was traveling in an easterly direction, and the collision occurred in the westbound lane, police said.
The Cavalier had been passing vehicles in its lane, police said. Police said improper passing and speed were also believed to be contributing factors.

The front of the car was completely destroyed. Police said the vehicle was totaled. The truck had front-end damage.
The driver of the truck, Nathaniel Smith, 26, of Cabot, was wearing a seat belt, did not report any injuries and refused medical transport, police said.

A portion of Route 2 was closed for about four hours this morning. Those responding to the crash scene included Marshfield, Plainfield and East Montpelier fire units and Cabot Ambulance Service.

Trooper Jacob Metayer led the investigation of the accident.
