Police cruiser catches fire; officer uninjuredOctober 04,2012
A police cruiser caught fire this morning on Interstate 91, but the officer driving at the time was able to pull over safely and remove expensive equipment before the vehicle was a total loss.
At about 11:45 a.m. Trooper Joshua Lewis was driving north on I-91 in the town of Bradford when he experienced mechanical failures in his police cruiser, according to a police press release.
Lewis reacted to the vehicle failures and pulled to the shoulder of the road at which time the engine caught fire, the release said.
The fire spread swiftly, however Lewis was able to remove several items from the trunk and police said Lewis' swift reactions caused several expensive items to be secured without damage. Lewis also secured the scene and directed motorists away from the hazard.
Bradford and Fairlee fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish the fire and mitigate any hazardous materials. The interstate was shut down for approximately 40 minutes. There were no injuries and no other vehicles damaged as a result of this incident.
The cruiser, a 2010 Ford Crown Vic, is a total loss. The vehicle had approximately 46,000 miles at the time of the incident. At this time, there are no known recalls on this make and model of vehicle.MORE IN This Just In
