Food for thought

Can someone please help me define the philosophy that lies behind the key question that drives our political machine? It is this: “Were you better off than you were four years ago?” (with its impending notion that an answer of “yes” will bring one a step closer to the “Great American Dream” — an idea to define at another time?)

It sounds like the answer to this question may be tantamount to the continual need for the “bigger is better” mentality that is seen as the root of materialism, which, as most of us know, has proven to be a double-edged sword.
