Avis I. Barnes
MONTPELIER — Avis Irene Thomas Barnes passed away Aug. 20, 2012, in the comfort of loved ones in her home at Heaton Woods. She was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Middlesex to Orville and Minnie (Berno) Thomas. Her siblings were Eldon, Nelson, Clayton, Warren and Marjorie. Avis grew up on a Middlesex farm and attended schools in Middlesex and Montpelier, graduating from Montpelier High School.
On Sept. 20, 1933, she married the love of her life, Frederick Barnes. They made their longtime home in a small gray farmhouse on Gallison Hill Road, where she lived until 2010. She and Fred raised numerous farm animals, among the most famous was Ernie, the rooster. They had large vegetable gardens and cared for their home with loving attention.
Avis loved family and friends and was happiest surrounded by them. She was an accomplished quilter, crocheted beautiful doilies and afghans, and braided rugs with the help of Fred. She has left a legacy of hand-crafted items for those who loved her.
She worked for National Life Insurance Co. for 31 years in the personnel department. Many will remember her as the smiling receptionist, greeting visitors and making them feel welcome at the company.
Avis was predeceased by her husband, parents and siblings and leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. She was very thankful to everyone who helped her along the way, among them her nephew Robert Barnes, who called her every day to check in with her; her neighbor, Lisa Moody, who stopped in every day to care for her; her great-niece, Tammy Simon, who made sure the winter snows were shoveled away from the roof and grounds; and the wonderful caretakers at Heaton Woods who treasured her and gave her tender loving care.
A graveside ceremony to celebrate her life will be held at Green Mount Cemetery, State Street in Montpelier, Thursday, Aug. 23, at noon.
Donations in her memory may be made to Heaton Woods, 10 Heaton St., Montpelier, VT 05602.
