Righting the wrongs
Couldn’t help but notice the irony in Tuesday’s paper. On the one hand, the NCAA announced it was wiping away Penn State’s record-setting winning season on account of the sex abuse scandal. At the same time, Springfield was announcing a celebration in honor of Charles Lindbergh’s record-setting trans-Atlantic flight. After his accomplishment, Lindbergh, folks should recall, wanted America to make a peace treaty with Nazi Germany and spoke often of the threat of the “Jewish race.”
He was condemned by figures as diverse as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Dr. Seuss.
It should be noted, however, that once war did break out, Lindbergh was a staunch supporter and was heavily involved in air support in the Pacific theater.
Maybe Penn State, too, will take steps to right the wrongs.
