Thanks for taking a stand
Mr. Pappas, I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your commentary (Times Argus, July 19) regarding the decision by the Boy Scouts to continue the organization’s discriminatory practices regarding gay and lesbian Scouts and leaders. Growing up I knew a couple of kids and had a close cousin who were Eagle Scouts and I know the work and dedication that they put into it. The one clear commonality among them was their character, which — as you point out — they maintained through the years and applied to whatever they did. I think you did that as well with this piece, which was obviously difficult to write and very personal.
Perhaps if there are others, former Eagle Scouts or Scout leaders, willing to take a risk as you did and publicly denounce this horrible decision and divisive message to kids, the Boy Scouts of America will get the message that it’s time to actually walk the walk.
