    BARRE — Leon H. “Pappy” Dunn, 76, of Grandview Avenue, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

    Born Sept. 24, 1935, in Hudson Falls, N.Y., he was the son of Smith C. and Marjorie (Gonyo) Dunn. Pappy graduated from Hudson Falls High School and went on to graduate from Norwich University in Northfield in the class of 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

    On June 11, 1960, he married Laura Lane. Following their marriage, they always made their home in Barre.

    Pappy worked for the state of Vermont Highway Department as a civil engineer in bridge and highway construction until his retirement after 37 years. Later, he went to work for four years for Dufresne-Henry in Burlington as an engineer.

    During his retirement years, Pappy and Laura enjoyed travelling. He loved the outdoors, hunting, playing golf and time spent cutting wood. In earlier years, he coached Little League, volunteered at the BOR in Barre, and kept the skating rink in North Barre flooded during the winter. He was known for his sense of humor and always had a good story to tell.

    Survivors include his wife, Laura Lane Dunn of Barre; a daughter, Karen Philbrick and her husband, Ben of Whitefield, N.H.; two sons, Jeffrey Dunn and his wife, Cara of Waterbury and Gordon Dunn and his wife, Nicole of Douglas, Mass.;four grandchildren, Christian Dunn, Justin Dunn, Mikayla Dunn and Hunter Dunn; a sister, Marjorie Minick of Burlington; a brother, Timothy P. Dunn and his wife, Jackie of Queensbury, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Penny Lane of Williston; and manynieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Smith C. Dunn Jr. and a sister, Julia Hope Dunn.

    His funeral service will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Interment will take place in the Elmwood Cemetery in Barre. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
