BURLINGTON — The Vermont office of the U.S. attorney says Border Patrol agents caught a Canadian man after he crossed into Derby Line from Quebec despite having been deported from the U.S.
Prosecutors say 38-year-old Elias Joseph is a Canadian citizen who has an extensive criminal record and was deported from the United States at the end of April.
He has a criminal record in New York state dating to 1993 and served five years in prison after a 1996 conviction.
Prosecutors say if convicted of the latest charge Joseph could be sentenced to 20 years in prison because of his criminal record.
