NORTHFIELD — A Northfield man was briefly hospitalized and later lodged at the St. Johnsbury prison after allegedly threatening to kill his roommate late last week.
According to police, Michael Smith, 43, is facing charges of domestic assault, disorderly conduct, simple assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Police said they were called to a confrontation at Smith’s residence for the fifth time in one week moments before midnight Friday. Police said witnesses told them Smith had grabbed his roommate and threatened to kill him. Neighbors intervened, and in the process of separating the two, Smith allegedly scratched his roommate’s neck.
According to police, when they tried to take Smith into custody he became violent — slamming his head into the cruiser divider and kicking an officer in the knee with his steel-toe boots.
Police say they were eventually able to restrain Smith, who yelled profanities and threats at them and others. They say he was treated for a self-inflicted injury at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin and later held at the correctional center in St. Johnsbury for lack of bail. -
